This was a rematch of the championship game of the conference tournament from last year.  It turned out to be quite a game. Just like last year, California jumped out to an early lead, hitting a 3 on their possession and getting up by 7 quickly. Also just like last year the girls responded with a run of their own to tie it at 10. Kerrigan picked up two early fouls and had to sit and our bench of Karli Kempf and Zoie Turner really stepped up and helped keep us in it.  Offensively, Carson was our do everything person in the first quarter scoring 7 points. In the second, I think we got a bit worn down and they forced us into some tired mistakes on defense. On offense we were carried by Sara hitting 3 threes in the quarter. We had gotten down by as many as 12, but cut it 8 by halftime. In the third quarter our girls did a very good job with the press and forced some turnovers by California.  Sara scored nine more points and all five starters scored in the quarter as we managed to take a one point lead into the fourth. We only made one field goal in the fourth, but managed to still hold on for the victory. I thought that a huge key for us was Payton on the glass, she got some big boards down the stretch for us. Sara hitting 5 3’s was big as well. We need to continue to improve our free throw shooting percentage and we will get better at finishing games, but this was a great win over a high quality opponent. The girls are headed to their fourth straight conference championship game.
