The Lady Indians began their daunting run of three straight games against state-ranked opponents when we went to Ashland to play #9 Southern Boone. This would end up being one of the more exciting, hard-fought games that the girls have had this year. In the first quarter we had a little bit of trouble with their half-court pressure. I was very pleased that we had no turnovers against their press, because it is a good one. Southern Boone was able to convert some steals into layups and a banked in three helped their momentum in the first. We took a timeout and the girls righted the ship defensively and we were down only by five after one. Our defense was much better in the second as we held them to only seven points. Our outside offensive gave got going in the second as Sara and Reese both hit two three-pointers and Sara added another bucket as we doubled them up. I think that we shocked them a bit by being up two at the break. To their credit, they came out and played better especially on the defensive end, holding us to only six points by Sara for the quarter. Going into the fourth down two we felt very good about our chances. Continuing the trend of the entire game, the fourth was back and forth. We would go up one, they would take the lead. We'd tie it up only to have Southern Boone go up by two. The key play was with 1:30 they got an and one on a tough play in the middle. They missed the free throw, but got the rebound and ran more clock. They eventually made another FT. We pushed the ball and had a chance to take a three to tie, but weren't able to get a shot off. They made a few FT's for the final five point margin. It was a great game to watch and I could not be more proud of the girls. We got great contributions on the glass from Alisa and Paige R., a couple big assists of the bench from Paige L., good defense from Alyssa, and some scoring from Ella. Our leader was Sara tying her career high in points set the previous game, scoring 30 against a very high-caliber opponent. I wish that we could have held on for the win, but I saw a ton of positives in the this game.
